Jobs for April in the Garden

In April, it finally feels like spring is starting to happen. The grass begins to grow, blossom appears, and leaves appear on trees that have been bare all winter. April is a month of anticipation and activity in the garden. So what are the jobs for April in the garden?

Soil preparation is an important April task.  As the earth warms, prepare the beds for planting by loosening compacted soil and enriching it with organic matter. Dig in compost, well-rotted manure, or other amendments to improve its structure and fertility. This groundwork sets the stage for healthy root development and robust plant growth throughout the growing season.

April is the beginning of the planting season for a wide range of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. Hardy annuals like sweet peas, pansies, and calendulas can be sown directly into the garden beds, adding welcome bursts of colour to borders and containers. It’s time to plant early vegetables like lettuce, spinach, and radishes. It’s also a good time to plant perennials.

Longer days and higher temperatures are also signals for wild plants to start growing. Diligent weeding is required in April to keep formal areas of the garden looking tidy. Mulching around plantings helps suppress weed growth, conserve soil moisture, and maintain a tidy appearance.

In April, you can also go ahead with trimming back overgrown shrubs and trees. Take the opportunity to shape them into pleasing shapes by removing any dead or diseased branches. This attention promotes healthy growth, encourages flowering, and enhances the overall aesthetics of the garden. It’s also a good time to prune spring-flowering shrubs once their blooms have faded, ensuring a bountiful display for the following year.

Your grass is awakening from its winter dormancy and beginning a season of vigorous growth. Regular mowing, aerating, and fertilizing are essential to maintain a lush, green lawn that sets off the rest of the garden.

In April, the English garden comes alive with possibility, offering a canvas for gardeners to express their creativity and make something special.
